Dear Mum, You Deserve the Biggest Love Story of All—With Yourself

Is self-love is the missing piece in motherhood?




It’s Valentine’s day - I have the love cookies ready for my little boys (and my big one too) and I must say I’m loving the beautiful flowers and bath bomb from the Hubbie too. But I truly believe that Valentine’s day, with all its read hearts and love supercharged, is actually a wonderful day to think about self-love – especially for the new mum who has probably not thought about herself all too much lately.


I know I have to remind myself to look after myself all too often. Amongst managing the logistics of house, work, school, and home, and chatting about said logistics, the days and weeks can pass by so fast that I forget to stop and truly show myself the love I deserve. But the reality is that self-love is a necessity—because if I’m running on empty, I can’t give my best to my children, my partner, or myself. That’s why today is the perfect moment to pause, take a deep breath, and choose to put myself back on the list.


It Starts With LOVE


I believe that everything starts with love. You’ve read this far because I think you agree. And the best act of self-love? Focusing on your health and wellbeing, especially when facing the challenges of motherhood and the myths and misconceptions that come with it. This self-love is the foundation of your journey. By prioritising your health and wellbeing, you’re caring for yourself and setting a powerful example for your new baby.


We should really be showing ourselves love every single day, even amidst the demands of motherhood and the myths that surround us—or especially because of these things. Some of the tools here can support you on this incredible journey. They serve as a positive companion, focusing on holistic wellbeing for joy, health, and happiness. This is not about restrictions or what you cannot do; it’s about discovering the beautiful practices that work for you and enhance your life.


Loving yourself enough to prioritise your health and wellbeing is one of the most important mindset shifts you can take into motherhood. Embrace the journey of holistic health, and you’ll find that it truly is the key to lasting happiness and fulfilment.


Why Am I Beating This Drum?


Motherhood is one of the biggest transitions a woman will go through in her lifetime—it’s called Matrescence. Women need more help than ever before to transition into motherhood with confidence, to trust their own instincts, to feel supported, and to shape their unique motherhood journey in a way that works for them. I wish someone had told me this when I was pregnant. I wish someone had helped me understand that we learn to be mothers and that in that learning journey, self-love and self-care are essential to the enjoyment of the experience. I believe I could have embraced the journey more, not been so hard on myself, and released some of the pressure that ultimately tainted my early years of motherhood.


Sleep deprivation, identity shifts, and the pressures of modern parenting all contribute to the overwhelm that mothers feel nowadays. But by nurturing mind, body, and soul—by giving yourself some well-earned and well-deserved self-love—you can feel empowered and confident to navigate this wild journey with ease and grace. A focus on holistic wellness creates a foundation for not just surviving, but thriving, in motherhood.


A Daily Ritual of Self-Love


Words are powerful. As Maya Angelou said,

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

And how do you make yourself feel? What if, every morning, instead of jumping into a to-do list, you took a moment to remind yourself that you are worthy, strong, and enough? A few words can make a big difference, setting the tone for the day ahead.
