The Motherhood Shift: Thriving Through Matrescence

Motherhood changes everything. One day, you recognise yourself—your routines, your body, your sense of self. The next, it can feel like you’re standing in the middle of a whirlwind, trying to grasp onto something solid. This transition, known as matrescence, is one of the most profound shifts a woman will ever experience—yet so little of our world prepares us for it.

What if I told you that the key to navigating this transformation isn’t about bouncing back or striving for perfection, but about building a foundation that allows you to thrive? What if, instead of just surviving, you could move through this phase feeling energised, strong, and more like you? This is the motherhood shift.

The Problem with Modern Wellness

Wellness, as it’s often sold to us, is about looking good. The right diet. The right exercise. The right body. But when you become a mother, you quickly realise that chasing external ideals won’t sustain you. You don’t need another impossible standard to reach—you need something that supports you, grounds you, and makes your day-to-day feel more manageable.

You only need to look at the statistics surrounding the use of Ozempic to see that while brands and magazines showcase diverse body types, the obsession with thinness still prevails. Recent data reveals that approximately 13% of American adults have used GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic for weight loss or related purposes, with prescription fills for these drugs increasing by over 400% between January 2021 and December 2023. (kff.org, today.usc.edu) This surge underscores how the wellness industry often preys on insecurities, offering quick fixes instead of sustainable solutions.

The Shift: From Looking Good to Feeling Good

What if we flipped the script? What if wellness wasn’t about achieving a certain size or following a rigid routine, but about feeling good—strong, calm, energised, and present? With this shift comes awareness, ease, and a deeper ‘why’ behind how we care for ourselves.

This is where holistic wellbeing comes in.

Holistic health isn’t about doing more—it’s about making small, intentional choices that support your mind, body, and soul. It’s about finding what truly nourishes you. Through my research, reading, and health coaching experience, I’ve developed six key levers of wellbeing that help create a toolkit for navigating matrescence in a way that is simple, natural, sustainable, and joyful.

In motherhood, control often feels like an illusion. But while we can’t always control the things happening around us, we can control how we respond to them. As the saying goes—

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.” — Viktor E. Frankl.

This is why I believe in the power of a wellbeing toolkit—small, accessible habits that bring glimmers of joy and stability throughout the day. These are the anchor points that help us navigate the chaos with more ease, curiosity, and even a little fun.

Some of the most transformative tools I’ve found are also the simplest:

  • Movement that feels good—walking, stretching, or yoga, rather than punishing workouts.

  • Breathwork and mindfulness—small moments of pause to reset and recenter.

  • Nourishing food—not restrictive diets, but mindful, intuitive choices.

  • Time in nature—a powerful (and free) tool for restoring balance.

  • A morning ritual—even five minutes to set the tone for the day.

These habits aren’t about adding more to your plate—they’re about creating tiny, sustainable shifts that support you from the inside out. When we stop chasing perfection and start tuning into what truly makes us feel good, everything changes.
